I discovered a sneaky way to save some money going to the airport.
The story didn’t start out as a save money endeavor. I flew into Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With the plan to rent a car and drive down to meet my friends in the Florida Keys.
I rode the complimentary shuttle bus to the car rental company I booked. At the counter, I was denied my rental because I am a Florida resident. The employee said they could rent me a vehicle if I can put a $2,000 deposit down. Priceline never mentioned this. I walked to another company and they gave me the same spiel. Believe it or not Fort Lauderdale deals with a lot of theft etc. so they make Florida residents put a down payment to rent a car.
I don’t have a couple thousands of dollars laying aside. So I thought of another way. I took a $25 greyhound to Key Largo where my friends and I were staying. This ended up being brilliant. This was my first time on the greyhound and I was very impressed. The bus was nice, had reclining seats, WiFi on board, snack vending (at the terminal) and outlets on the bus. So I saved tons of money just by riding the bus. I didn’t have to pay gas OR tolls.
Here’s the super sneaky way I saved on airport travel. At the end of the trip I paid another $25 to take the greyhound bus from Key Largo to Fort Lauderdale. Now luckily for me, the Fort Lauderdale greyhound is only 2.5 miles from the car rental where my story began.
I wanted the exercise so I walked the 2.5 miles. I stopped along the way, ate pizza and just took my time.
I walked to the rental place and hopped in line for the FREE shuttle to the airport. No taxi, uber or lyft needed!
I plan to experiment with this again. The hack here is if you are staying at a hotel that does NOT provide free airport transportation. Go to a Car Rental company and hop on the shuttle to the airport. Act like you just returned your rental.
Has anybody else used greyhound? What are your thoughts on this sneaky way to save money?
